So you remember THIS right? Well, in case you don't, back in 2004 these horrific photos surfaced basically confirming that, on top of our then-secret indefinite detention policies, indeed torture was being used against prisoners at Abu Ghraib. I remember this very well, because the news broke as I was visiting Japan for the first time. Contractor CACI International executed the practice, and the prisoners eventually sued.
You may have heard that they lost their case. Well, this is indeed partially true. The case was dismissed, but because the plantiffs were barred from coming to the US to testify, and that CACI was immune due to the fact that the incident happened overseas. However, just as you thought that this:
... was bad enough, take a look at THIS news:
Weeks after winning dismissal of a case alleging that CACI International employees directed mistreatment of Abu Ghraib detainees, the company has asked its accusers to pay a $15,580 bill for legal expenses.Weeks after winning dismissal of a case alleging that CACI International employees directed mistreatment of Abu Ghraib detainees, the company has asked its accusers to pay a $15,580 bill for legal expenses.
So, not only was the trial not even allowed to occur, but CACI countersued... AND WON, and now the prisoners, who went through this:
... now have to pay their torturers???
And we live in an exceptional country???
Exceptionally what?
